One of the programs was a 'Lichen Walk', led by
one of the area's well known lichenologists. It wasn't an aerobic walk, as we
would stop often to examine various forms of lichen as we encountered them
(they're everywhere). We learned quite a bit about using lichen to age whatever
they are growing on (due to the slow predictable rate of growth), and their use
in monitoring air pollution, among other interesting bits of
information. |
 |
On another occasion, the walk was led by a
nature photographer who is also an avid birder. For the most part, birds are
identified, and hopefully located by their songs.
It's interesting to
hear a noise in a tree and have him say "Ahh - there's a yellow-backed,
Western, long-billed, twittertail!" Where...Where? |
 |
Along the ridge top, there are a few good views.
This is looking east at the town of Coloma and the South Fork of the American
River.
The site of the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill that started
the 1849 gold rush is to the left of the bridge in the larger
photo. |
 |
Looking west from the ridge is the town of Lotus
and the river. It is a favorite spot for kayakers and rafters to launch. There
are also many rafting companies that make the area home. |
 |
At the top of the ridge is a bench for snacking,
discussion, and/or history lessons. |
 |
The trail winds around some of the private
residences of town that border the park. There is also an old cemetery, church,
spring, irrigation ditch, and cabin that you'll pass by.
Be sure to
spend a little time visiting the park's museum and displays while you are
there. |
