DESCRIPTION: {native} This is the largest of our poppies, with a bowl up to 3" across. Note the large reddish-orange receptacle directly under the flower petals, an identifying characteristic of this species.

HABITAT: Open areas, grassy or rocky, up to 6,000'.

NOTES: This is California's state flower, and can be seen in great profussion along our roads and fields in mid-spring though early summer.
