DESCRIPTION: {native} The plant is a deciduous large shrub or small tree (to about 25 feet). The half inch red/magenta flowers are in clusters, and appear early in spring before the leaves appear. The seed pods (legumes) appear in early summer and persist until after the leaves have fallen and into the winter.

HABITAT: Grows in foothill chaparrals and woodland below 3,000 feet.

NOTES: Used as native ornamentals and tolerates dry conditions well.
