Bachelor Buttons

Bachelor Buttons
Centaurea cyanus

[sen-TORE-ee-a SY-an-us]

FAMILY: Asteraceae (Sunflower)

DESCRIPTION: {introduced} Unlike many sunflowers which have both 'ray' and 'disk' flowers, Bachelor Buttons only have 'disk' flowers. The outside flower-like structures are really sterile discoid petals.

HABITAT: Disturbed grassland, open woods under 6,000'. Our colorful patch is on a sunny hillside of disturbed shale.

NOTES: Highly variable in color - from white through blue to lavender all in the same patch. A dreded cousin is Yellow Star-thistle, Centaurea solstitialis.
